GALACTIC

Galactic is a funky, acid jazz, New Orleans groove band, with obvious influences from The Meters, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, and more. They tour constantly, so be sure to check them out in a town near you. Galactic is a sextet of drums, guitar, piano and organ, bass, horns, and vocals, with many special guests.

Stanton Moore - All Kooked Out

Stanton Moore, the drummer for Galactic's first solo project. This disk has been played during many setbreaks of Phish's shows. Stanton is joined by special guests Charlie Hunter (Blue Note eight string guitarist), Skerik (Tuatara and Critters Buggin' tenor and baritone saxophonist), and a cast of New Orleans musicians including Michael Ray (Sun Ra trumpeter), Ben Ellman (Galactic and the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars), Matt Perrine (on tuba) and others. These recordings were made completely live in the studio (with no overdubs, no headphones and definitely no samples). If you enjoy Galactic, this album is a must have.

MARC RIBOT

Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos

This CD, often played at setbreaks during Phish shows, "is a tribute to the late great Cuban composer, guitarist, tres player, and band leader, Arsenio Rodriguez. Most of the material on it was either written or recorded by Arsenio during a career of more than three decades, from the 1930's until his death in 1972." Marc Ribot's masterful guitarwork is often paired with John Medeski on organ. The Prosthetic Cubans obviously have a Latin flair, but almost sounded a little like Santana the first time I heard the album, even though I knew it wasn't. Very mellow, for the most part, this album is a very beautiful tribute to an incredible composer who was unknown to me until now.

MERL SAUNDERS

Merl Saunders Live With His Funky Friends

Live Merl Saunders and The Rainforest Band, spanning performances from 1989 to 1996. The Funky friends include John Popper (Blues Traveler), Trey Anastasio (Phish), Dr. John, David Grisman, Steve Kimock (Zero), Maria Muldaur, and Jerry Garcia, on a very mellow track from '89. There are 2 very nice, long, and funky jams on "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and "We All Wanna Boogie". Most of Live with His Funky Friends consists of cover songs by such vast songwriters as Randy Newman, Willie Dixon, George Gershwin, Allen Toussaint, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter, and a few Saunders originals.

SPIRITUALIZED

Lazer Guided Melodies

Pure Phase

Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space

Spiritualized - Royal Albert Hall 10/10/97

Performing with horns, strings, and a full choir, Spiritualized plays the historic Royal Albert Hall in London. Most of the 2 CD's consists of material from the most recent album, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, with a few selections from Pure Phase and, my favorite, Lazer Guided Melodies. Jason Pierce (J. Spaceman), was the founding member of Spacemen 3, and is the current leader of Spiritualized. Their music, which is very eclectic and impossible to categorize, does require repeated listening to appreciate. Very primal and easy to get lost in, Spiritualized is the ultimate headphone experience.
